What Are Dental Crowns Used For?

If a crown would work for you, then there are two different ways that they can be placed on your tooth.

The first and most common method is the multi day procedure. On the first day, you’ll go to the dentists where they will take images of the tooth, such as by taking a mould or using X rays. Then, you’ll have a local anaesthetic applied to your mouth. At this point, the dentist will trim down the tooth that will receive a crown, and make an impression of it.

At this point, they will fit a temporary crown onto your tooth to protect it. Then, they’ll send the impression to a lab, where a permanent crown will be made to fit your teeth. Once it’s ready, you’ll come back in and the dentist will fit that crown for you.

There’s also an option to have a crown fitted in a same day procedure. In this instance, the dentist will take digital pictures of your mouth, and using a scan, will be able to make a crown right there in the dental surgery. This can take 1-2 hours. Then, the dentist can fit the new crown over the tooth, just as they would in the above procedure.

In both instances, the crown shouldn’t hurt being applied, as you’ll have an anaesthetic beforehand. It will feel very similar to having a filling done on your tooth.

Taking Care Of Your Dental Crown

Once you’ve had dental crowns in Hammersmith applied to your teeth, how should you take care of them? There’s no specialist care you need to perform on them to keep them in good condition. As such, you should clean your teeth twice a day, as you normally would.

The crown itself can’t decay, but the tooth underneath it can still be susceptible to it. As such, if the join of the tooth and the crown starts decaying, it’ll endanger the crown. As such, keep cleaning your teeth as normal and get regular check ups to prevent this.

Getting Used To Your Dental Crown
